Gerber recalls snack food over possible contamination

Parents may want to check their pantries after Gerber announced a recall of one of its popular snacks.

Scripps News

The company is voluntarily recalling certain batches of its Arrowroot Biscuits over concerns the packages may contain "soft plastic and/or paper pieces," according to a company statement.

Gerber said the material originated from an arrowroot flour supplier that initiated its own recall. The company said it is no longer working with that supplier.

The recall affects 5.5-ounce packages produced between July and September 2025.

Consumers who have the recalled products are urged to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.

"While no illnesses or injuries have been reported, we are acting out of an abundance of caution following a recall from the supplier," Gerber said.

Weekend bomb cyclone forecast calls for snow. How much will fall?

Weekend bomb cyclone forecast calls for snow. How much will fall?

Whether you call it abomb cyclone, nor'easteror a blizzard, it's going to be a memorable weekend weather event for some along the East Coast as January turns to February.

"This storm could unleash heavy snow and howling winds across the Southeast this weekend," said Scott Homan, AccuWeather senior meteorologist, in a Jan. 29 email to USA TODAY.

A few snow flurries are even possible in Florida as bitterly cold air sweeps south all the way through the Sunshine State.

"People need to prepare for the possibility of dangerous blizzard conditions in some coastal areas from North Carolina to the southern Jersey shore," Homan said. "Blizzard conditions may reach parts of Long Island and southern New England."

This will lead to "sharply reduced visibilities due to the snow and blowing snow that will make travel extremely treacherous," theNational Weather Service said in an online forecast.

Snow forecast for Carolinas, Virginia

Forecast guidance has come into better agreement that this will be a major snowstorm for North Carolina and the Virginia Tidewater region, where over 6 inches of snowfall is increasingly likely, according toWeather.com.

"For cities such as Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro, North Carolina, this could be the biggest snowstorm in decades," said AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski in anonline forecast."In Norfolk, Virginia, it could top last February's whopping 11.1 inches."

The official forecast from theNational Weather Serviceshows 8.4 inches in Raleigh, 7 inches in Greensboro and 6 inches in Charlotte.

Snow is also likely in portions of eastern Georgia, eastern Tennessee and southern West Virginia, the weather service said.

The weather servicewarned that the strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. "Travel may become dangerous or even impossible with widespread closures and disruptions to infrastructure possible."

A map from the National Weather Service shows where snowfall impacts are most likely this coming weekend.

Snow forecast for Florida

Any snow that falls in the Florida Peninsula should be of the conversational variety – with the far bigger story being the frigid temperatures across the state. The weather service in Tampasaid light mixed snow/rain showers or snow showers/flurries are possible in the region Saturday Jan. 31.

Snow forecast for Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland

Coastal areas of Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland could see some snow, but the more significant event will be the strong winds. For example, Ocean City, Maryland, should pick up 2 inches of snow while Dover, Delaware, and Atlantic City, New Jersey, see 1 inch of snow, according to the weather service.

There is increasing potential for strong north to northeast winds, and potential for significant coastal flooding on Sunday Feb. 1.

The weather service said, "this rapidly deepening storm system will produce powerful onshore winds along the Mid-Atlantic coast from the North Carolina Outer Banks northward. Wind gusts near hurricane-force will coincide with astronomical high tides to produce moderate to locally significant coastal flooding."

Snow forecast for New England

The bulk of the snow in New England should fall in southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

AccuWeather meteorologistsbelieve the most likely zone in the Northeast for 6-12 inches of snow will be in southeastern Massachusetts.

One lingering question is regarding Boston's snowfall, according toWeather.com. "It's still not clear whether the offshore low — or combination of lows — will pinwheel far enough offshore to keep any heavy snow potential pinned to Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, or may pivot heavy snowbands farther northwest into Boston," wrote Weather.com meteorologists Rob Shackelford and Jonathan Erdman in a Jan. 29online forecast.

American Airlines plans to resume US flights to Venezuela after Trump moves to open airspace

American Airlines plans to resume US flights to Venezuela after Trump moves to open airspace

By David Shepardson

Reuters

WASHINGTON, Jan 29 (Reuters) - American Airlines said on Thursday it plans to resume daily service to Venezuela pending government approval and subject to security assessments, just weeks after the U.S. military seized the country's leader.

U.S. President Donald Trump ‌earlier on Thursday asked the Transportation Department to lift restrictions that currently bar U.S. flights after a discussion with the ‌country's acting President Delcy Rodríguez.

"American citizens will be very shortly able to go to Venezuela, and they'll be safe there," Trump said.

American suspended service in 2019 after the U.S. barred flights. The United States earlier this month attacked Venezuela and seized the country's president, Nicolas Maduro, in a military operation.

American, which started operating in Venezuela in 1987, ‌said the flights will provide the opportunity for business, leisure and humanitarian travel to the region. It was the largest U.S. airline in the country ‍before the suspension of flights.

The Federal Aviation Administration will need to conduct assessments before resumption of flights, which are not likely to begin for a few months.

On January 16, the FAA warned airlines to exercise caution when flying over Mexico, Central America and parts of South America, citing the risks ‌of potential military activities and GPS interference.

The FAA said it had issued Notices to Airmen covering Mexico and Central American countries, as well as Ecuador, Colombia and portions of airspace within the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Tensions between the U.S. and regional leaders have ramped up since the Trump administration mounted a large-scale military buildup in the southern Caribbean.

Trump said earlier this month that drug cartels were running Mexico and suggested the U.S. could strike land targets to combat them, in one of a series of threats to deploy U.S. military force against cartels.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly warned that any unilateral military action by the U.S. in ‍Mexico would constitute a grave violation of the nation's sovereignty. At the same time, she has agreed on bilateral security cooperation with the U.S. to avoid Mexico being in Trump's crosshairs.

Last month, a JetBlue passenger jet bound for New York took evasive action to avoid a mid-air collision with a U.S. Air ‌Force tanker plane near Venezuela that did not have its transponder activated.

Guardians 3B Jose Ramirez signs 7-year deal through 2032

Guardians 3B Jose Ramirez signs 7-year deal through 2032

The Cleveland Guardians signed seven-time All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez to a new seven-year contract that runs through the 2032 season.

The club did not announce the financial terms on Thursday but multiple reports earlier this month placed the value at $175 million, or $25 million per season for the 33-year-old veteran.

Ramirez had three years and $69 million remaining on his previous contract, a five-year, $124 million extension he signed in 2022.

Ramirez has finished in the top-10 in American League MVP voting on eight occasions, including a third-place finish last season when he batted .283 with 30 homers, 85 RBIs and 44 stolen bases in 158 games.

He enters his 14th season in 2026 ranked second in franchise history in homers (285, trailing only Hall of Famer Jim Thome's 337) and stolen bases (287, trailing only Kenny Lofton's 452). He has a lifetime .279 batting average and .857 OPS to go with 1,001 runs scored, 398 doubles and 949 RBIs.

Ramirez needs just 11 more games to pass early-20th century infielder Terry Turner (1,619) and become Cleveland's all-time leader.

LeBron James Tears Up After Cleveland Cavaliers Pay Tribute In What ‘Very Well Could Be’ His Last Hometown Game

NEED TO KNOW

  • LeBron James became emotional during a Cleveland Cavaliers video tribute that played on the scoreboard during Wednesday night's game

  • The 41-year-old NBA star teased after the game that he is considering retiring after this season

  • LeBron is currently in his record-breaking 23rd NBA season

LeBron Jameswiped away tears Wednesday night as the Cleveland Cavaliers paid tribute to him in what may very well have been the last hometown game of the NBA star's career.

The emotional moment happened during a first quarter break in the action when a tribute video honoring James' career in Cleveland was played on the Rocket Arena scoreboard.

The 41-year-old basketball star appeared to be trying to hold in his emotions before he put his head in his jersey and later used a piece of tissue to wipe away the tears, as the Cleveland crowd gave the visiting Los Angeles Lakers player a standing ovation.

After the game, the 23-year NBA veteran told reporters that despite the poignant moment, he was still uncertain whether Wednesday night's game was the last professional game he'd ever play in Cleveland – 40 miles north of where he grew up in Akron, Ohio – and where James played 11 seasons, delivering a long-awaited NBA championship to the city in 2016.

"I'm just trying to take everything in, not take the moments for granted," James said after the game, according toESPN. "Because it could be [my last season]. I obviously haven't made a decision on the future, but it very well could be."

The four-time NBA champion said he felt "more present" during Wednesday night's game than usual, hence his response to the Cavaliers' montage of his legendary performance in Game 5 of the 2007 Eastern Conference Finals during which he scored 25 straight points.

"I think it just comes from just being present," James explained. "I was just more present today than I've been [in past trips to Cleveland]. [It] definitely got to me a little bit, for sure."

LeBron also noted that the fact he was playing with his sonBronny, 21, made the night even more special.

"My mom gets to watch her son and her grandson play in the NBA at the same time," LeBron pointed out after the game. "I actually just started to think about how insane that is. Yeah, that's awesome."

The four-time NBA MVP handed off his game-worn jersey to his mother,Gloria, after the final buzzer."I was almost emotional myself," Bronny said after the game.

LeBron has remained mum on his future and whether it could be his last, after entering the league out of high school when he was 18 years old and going on to become the sport's all-time leading scorer.

"Obviously, the question gets asked more and the thought creeps in my mind more at 41 years old of when the end is and where's the finish line for us to hang this thing up," James said after the game. "But the drive is how much, like, juice I can squeeze out of this orange. ... I'm in a battle with Father Time and I'm taking it personal, and I am going to see how many more times I [can] be victorious over him."

Ranking 2026 NBA trade deadline candidates with Giannis, Towns, Davis

January 29, 2026
Ranking 2026 NBA trade deadline candidates with Giannis, Towns, Davis

Giannis Antetokounmpo and theMilwaukee Bucksare on the verge of a breakup after months of intense speculation about his future, and it is the potential move that looms over the entire NBA trade deadline this year. The Bucks are finally listening to offers for the two-time MVP, according to multiple reports, as the team's hopes of being an Eastern Conference contender again dwindle and Antetokounmpo is on the shelf with a calf injury.

Teams are lining up their best assets to try to pry Antetokounmpo away from Milwaukee beforethe Feb. 4 NBA trade deadline, with front offices willing to part with players and assets not previously mentioned as available with a superstar still in the back-end of his prime on the market. But that could also slow trade talks for other playersover the next week, as everybody holds off until Antetokounmpo's situation is resolved. The Bucks also may wait until the offseason to move Antetokounmpo, when draft picks are settled.

It nonetheless adds another layer to this year's NBA trade deadline and the list of notable players who could be on the move keeps growing. What happens in the coming days may shake up the playoff race and, in Antetokounmpo's case, change the trajectory ofthe only NBA franchise he's called home.

Here's a breakdown of the top candidates potentially available at the 2026 NBA trade deadline and how they rank:

The NBA has announced its starters for the 2026 All-Star Game. Starters were selected through a fan vote (50% weight), and a survey of NBA players (25%) and a media panel (25%). Players were selected without regard for position. See the five starters from each conference. <p style=Eastern Conference Cade Cunningham, Detroit Pistons (second All-Star selection)

GIANNIS LANDING SPOTS:Best trade partners for Bucks

Other players to monitor:Ochai Agbaji,Jose Alvarado,Lonzo Ball,Nic Claxton,DeMar DeRozan,Ayo Dosunmu,Keon Ellis,Daniel Gafford,Jerami Grant,Jrue Holiday,De'Andre Hunter,Tyus Jones,Kyle Kuzma,Zach LaVine,Naji Marshall,Bennedict Mathurin,Khris Middleton,Malik Monk,Jusuf Nurkic,Immanuel Quickley,Chris Paul,Jakob Poeltl,Jordan Poole,Bobby Portis,Kristaps Porzingis,Collin Sexton,Dennis Schroder,Anfernee Simons,Jeremy Sochan,Nikola Vucevic,Coby White,Guerschon Yabusele

10.Jonathan Kuminga,Golden State Warriors

Golden State's situation at the NBA trade deadline changed whenJimmy Butler suffered a season-ending knee injury, but Kuminga is still a player who could be traded. He filled in well for Butler in one game before suffering his own knee injury that has him currently sidelined. Now, with Antetokounmpo talks heating up, the Warriors are being mentioned as a prime candidate to land the Bucks' superstar. That potential deal would likely include Kuminga's contract, which has a team option for next season.

9.RJ Barrett, Toronto Raptors

The Raptors are reportedly looking to upgrade their roster after a strong start to the 2025-26 season and their No. 3 overall pick from the 2019 NBA Draft could be the piece Toronto is willing to part with to find another player to team with Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram. Jakob Poeltl and Ochai Agbaji have also been mentioned as possible trade chips.

8.Domantas Sabonis, Sacramento Kings

Sabonis has returned from a knee injury just as the Kings appear ready to move on from most of the veterans on their roster, including Zach Lavine and DeMar DeRozan. Sabonis is more intriguing because he's younger and more accomplished. But he has two more years left on his contract and serious defensive limitations that have muted his effectiveness in the playoffs. Sabonis is just a year removed from consecutive all-NBA nods and could help a playoff contender with a need at center. A trade involving Barrett has been mentioned as a possibility.

7.Ja Morant, Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies are listening to trade offers for Morant, though it's unclear exactly what his trade value is after several years marred by durability issues, off-court concerns and declining production. Morant indicated publicly he wants to remain in Memphis. He's injured againand unlikely to return before the trade deadline, complicating any potential deal. When properly motivated, the 26-year-old point guard can still impact NBA games in a major way.

6.Tyler Herro,Miami Heat

Herro is having an injury-riddled season, but he was an all-star last season and continues to be an effective offensive threat from multiple levels when he does play. The Heat have long been rumored as a team that would go all-in to get Antetokounmpo if he were made available, and they would certainly part with Herro to get a deal done.

5.Julius Randle,Minnesota Timberwolves

Randle has performed well with the Timberwolves since coming over in the Karl-Anthony Towns trade before the 2024-25 season and agreed to a 3-year, $100-million extension with Minnesota less than a year ago. But like Herro, Randle is on this list now because of recent developments surrounding Antetokounmpo. The Timberwolves are among the teams pursuing the Bucks' star and Randle (and perhaps Naz Reid and/or Jaden McDaniels) would likely have to be part of a potential deal to make it work.

4.Michael Porter, Jr., Brooklyn Nets

Porter has turned into a potential trade-deadline asset after taking on a leading role and producing a career year in Brooklyn following an offseason trade from the Nuggets. Porter's combination of size and shooting would help any contender, much like he did as a role player in Denver during its 2023 NBA title run.

3.Anthony Davis, Dallas Mavericks

Trading Davis is complicated due to his ongoing hand injury, but he could be available for the postseason and remains a dominant two-way player when he's available. His lengthy injury history and contract, with two years and more than $120 million remaining after this season, will limit his options. But he could nonetheless alter the postseason picture if he goes to the right contender.

2.Karl-Anthony Towns,New York Knicks

There have been conflicting reports about Towns' potential availability at the NBA trade deadline over the past week, but Antetokounmpo's status change in Milwaukee means speculation about Towns' future with the Knicks will persist. If New York were to pull off an Antetokounmpo trade ‒ the Knicks reportedly held trade talks with the Bucks this past offseason – Towns would likely be the major salary in the deal. His transition under new Knicks coach Mike Brown hasn't gone as smoothly as hoped.

1.Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks

There is little doubt at this point that Antetokounmpo is the biggest prize at this trade deadline and reports this week suggest he and the team have reached a breaking point after 13 seasons together. But it still remains to be seen if the Bucks can get the kind of haul they want, like a young star and a plethora of first-round picks. The Miami Heat, New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors are considered serious suitors, according to ESPN, but the Bucks might be able to extract more by waiting to trade Antetokounmpo.

Pope tells Vatican office that processes sex abuse cases to uphold truth, justice and charity

January 29, 2026
Pope tells Vatican office that processes sex abuse cases to uphold truth, justice and charity

VATICAN CITY (AP) —Pope Leo XIVtold the Vatican's doctrine office on Thursday to uphold truth, justice and charity when deciding clergy sex abuse cases, confirming a calibrated approach to dealing with a scandal that hastarnished the Catholic Church's credibility worldwide.

History's first American pope dedicated only a small part of his speech to abuse in an address to members of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican office that polices Catholic doctrine but also processes abuse cases worldwide.

What Leo didn't say was almost more significant than what he did: Leo made no mention of victims in his speech, suggesting he believes the dicastery should function almost exclusively as a church tribunal, not a pastoral office.

Another Vatican department, thePontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, has become a main point of reference for abuse survivors. Pope Francis had made the commission part of the doctrine office, but Leo appears keen to keep the two functionally separate. No one from the survivor commission participated in Thursday's audience.

Leo told the bishops and cardinal members of the doctrine office that they should welcome and accompany the religious superiors who, according to the church's canon law, are responsible for investigating and sanctioning priests who molest or abuse young people.

"It is a very delicate area of ministry, in which it is essential to ensure that the requirements of justice, truth and charity are always honored and respected," Leo said.

It was a similar point that Leo, a canon lawyer, made earlier this week when he met with another Vatican tribunal, known as the Roman Rota, and spoke of the need to balance justice and charity in the search for truth.

Two decades after the abuse scandal exploded in his native U.S., Leo has indicated a generally cautiousapproachto handling abuse cases. He has insisted that church leaders must better listen to victims but also expressed concern that the rights of priests be better protected.

During a recent closed-door meeting with cardinals from around the world, Leo said the abuse crisis was by no means over and that church leaders needed to do better to truly, actively listen to victims and accompany them.

"We cannot close our eyes or hearts," Leo told cardinals Jan. 8. "The pain of the victims has often been greater because they did not feel welcomed or heard."

A meeting with the lay group of the Legion of Christ

Perhaps coincidentally, Leo went from the doctrine office audience Thursday into a separate meeting with consecrated members of Regnum Christi, the lay branch of theLegion of Christ religious order.

The Mexico-based Legion remains the Catholic Church's most egregious case of 20th century clergy sexual abuse and cover up: The Vatican in 2006 sanctioned its founder, the Rev. Marcial Maciel, to a lifetime of penance and prayer, but only after it ignoredfive decades of credible reportsthat Maciel was a pedophile, con artist, drug addict and religious fraud.

Leo met with members of Regnum Christi who are having a general assembly in Rome. The Legion too is having its once-every-six-year assembly to elect a new leadership, but there's no word if Leo will meet with Legion priests.

Leo didn't mention the Legion in his remarks to Regnum Christi. Nor did he refer to the founder of both movements, Maciel, who died in 2008. But he suggested that the Vatican-imposedreform launched in 2010after Maciel's crimes came to light was still a work in progress. He noted that Regnum Christi still needed to better define its unique spiritual inspiration, known in church terms as a charism, that justifies its existence and to find new styles of governance.

The Vatican investigation into the Legion and Regnum Christi identified profound problems in the cultlike organization, including abuses of authority and the way authority was exercised by superiors, that it said required a process of "purification."

"A truly evangelical government, moreover, is always oriented toward service: it supports, accompanies, and helps each member to become more like the savior every day," Leo said.

"You should not be afraid to experiment with new models of governance; on the contrary, it is good to keep in mind that the collective search for your own style of exercising authority opens up paths that not only enrich the societies and their individual members, and strengthen the sense of belonging and participation in the common mission."
