Trump compares Pearl Harbor to strikes on Iran in meeting Japan's leader

WASHINGTON, March 19 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump drew a parallel on Thursday between U.S. strikes on Iran and ‌Japan's 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, as he defended the war ‌he launched against Tehran while meeting Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Washington.

"We wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?" Trump replied when a journalist asked why he had not told allies about his war plans.

"You believe in surprise, I think much more so than us."

Takaichi's eyes widened ‌and she shifted in her chair as Trump, seated beside her in the Oval Office, evoked the moment that drew the U.S. into World War Two.

The Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, killed 2,390 Americans. The U.S. declared war on Japan the next day, with President Franklin D. Roosevelt calling it "a date which will live in infamy."

The U.S. defeated Japan ‌in August 1945, days after U.S. atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Trump's remarks received a mixed reaction on the streets of Tokyo on Friday.

Yuta Nakamura, a 33-year-old engineer with a petrochemical company, told Reuters that Takaichi had been put in "a very difficult situation," praising her for ‌doing well by "avoiding upsetting Trump."

"Personally, I took President Trump's remark as just a joke. But because of her position, if she laughed too much, she'd likely face criticism, so I imagine ‌it was quite hard for her to react."

Tokio Washino, a retiree, said: "Given the historical context of Japan having done that, and with Donald bringing it up as an example, it makes me feel a bit uneasy as a Japanese ‌citizen."

USA TODAY

DETROIT — A retired Detroit Police Department sergeant has been arrested and charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting five young women and girls over a period of about four years, prosecutors announced Thursday, March 19.

During anews conference, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy accused Benjamin Wagner, 68, of leading a "double life as a law enforcement officer and a serial rapist." Wagner faces 14 criminal charges, including eight counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, five counts of kidnapping, and one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Wagner allegedly sexually assaulted and kidnapped at gunpoint five victims, ages 15 to 23 years old, from 1999 to 2003, according to Worthy. The attacks took place early in the morning on Detroit's northwest side — all within 5½ miles of Wagner's residence at the time — as the victims were walking to school, home from work, or from a friend's house.

"The evidence found in this case concerning former DPD Sergeant Benjamin Wagner is egregious and disturbing," Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said ina statement. "It represents a deep betrayal to the oath us officers take as a symbol of public faith, as it violates the trust placed in law enforcement. Mr. Wagner's actions do not represent the integrity, values or mission held by the officers of the Detroit Police Department."

Wagner was arrested and charged following a multi-year investigation, according to Worthy. He was arrested in Greenville, North Carolina, on Tuesday, March 17, and will be extradited to Michigan, the FBI's Charlotte field office said ina statement.

The first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping charges carry maximum penalties of up to life in prison, according to the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Wagner is scheduled to be arraigned on March 26 in the 36th District Court in Detroit.

Worthy has urged anyone who may have been assaulted by Wagner to contact the Detroit Police Department's sex crimes unit. She noted that the investigation into Wagner remains ongoing.

Retired Detroit police sergeant was previously found not guilty in rape case

Wagner joined the Detroit Police Department in 1989 and received several awards and commendations before retiring in 2017, according to Worthy. During that time, he worked in various assignments, including at the 2nd and 10th precincts, investigative operations, the tactical services unit, criminal investigations, and the commercial auto theft unit.

In 2002, Wagner was suspended from his role as sergeant after he was charged with four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in the alleged rape of his stepdaughter, reported theDetroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. The girl, who was 15 at the time, said in a note to her mother that Wagner had been assaulting her since she was 7 or 8 years old.

Wagner was found not guilty by a Wayne Circuit Court jury and was later reinstated by the police department. After retiring from the Detroit Police Department, Worthy said he moved to Greenville.

In astatement on social media, the Greenville Police Department said it assisted the FBI with Wagner's arrest. Wagner was arrested at the Pitt-Greenville Airport, where he worked as an airline employee, without incident.

The Greenville Police Department and the FBI said Wagner was wanted in Michigan for multiple sexual assault investigations dating back to the late 1990s and early 2000s.

"At this time, we have no information to suggest Wagner was involved in any criminal activity in Greenville," the Greenville Police Department said. "He has not been connected to any local cases, and his DNA has not matched any cases in our system."

Benjamin Wagner linked to sexual assault cases through DNA

Investigators homed in on Wagner after examining previously untested rape kits, according to the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. In 2009, prosecutors discovered 11,341 sexual assault kits during aroutine tour of a Detroit police storage warehouse.

The kits had been collected from 1984 to 2009 and were never submitted for DNA testing, the prosecutor's office said. All the kits have been tested, and as of March 1, 5,684 investigations involving those kits have been completed, 36 are actively being investigated, and one is awaiting investigation.

The kits have also identified 858 suspected serial sexual offenders, according to the prosecutor's office. In the case against Wagner, prosecutors said in 2010, Michigan State Police linked an unknown man to Detroit sexual assaults that occurred from 1999 to 2003.

"The male suspect was unknown to the victims and the suspect's DNA was not contained in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS)," the prosecutor's office said in anews release. "In August 2023, the FBI Detroit Field Office received a report identifying an investigative lead to a potential suspect linked to these five sexual assault kits."

The FBI continued to work on the investigative lead, prosecutors said. In March, investigators were able to link Wagner to the five sexual assault cases.

Prosecutors provides timeline of alleged attacks

The Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney's Office provided a timeline and the circumstances surrounding the alleged attacks:

  • Nov. 10, 1999: A 17-year-old was heading to a friend's house after work when Wagner allegedly approached, pointed a gun at her, ordered her to another location, and sexually assaulted her. Wagner faces kidnapping and three first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges in connection with this incident.

  • Jan. 31, 2000: A 23-year-old woman was on her way to a store when Wagner allegedly pointed a gun at her head, kidnapped her, and sexually assaulted her. Wagner faces kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges.

  • Sept 28, 2000:  A 15-year-old girl was walking to school when Wagner allegedly grabbed her arm, put a gun in her face, kidnapped her, and sexually assaulted her. Wagner is charged with one count of kidnapping, one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, and one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

  • November 19, 2000: A 20-year-old woman was on her way from a friend's home when Wagner allegedly put a gun to her back, kidnapped, and sexually assaulted her. Wagner faces one count of kidnapping and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

  • April 15, 2003: A 16-year-old girl was walking to catch a bus to take her to school when Wagner allegedly kidnapped her, brandished a gun, and sexually assaulted her. Wagner faces two charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and a kidnapping charge.

"The alleged facts in this case are disturbing, unsettling and infuriating," Worthy said, adding that in each incident, Wagner "threatened their lives if they reported" and did not use a condom.

The Lakers say Luka Doncic should be in the MVP conversation. A 60-point game is the latest proof

MIAMI (AP) — Luka Doncic stepped to the foul line in the final moments and couldn't help but hear what the crowd was yelling, over and over and over again.

An MVP chant.

On the road, no less.

"I think every player wants to hear it," Doncic said. "I got a lot of goosebumps, so it was pretty special."

The cheers in Miami were certainly warranted, after Doncic — the NBA's scoring leader — put together one of the best games of his life, a 60-point masterpiece that helped theLos Angeles Lakers beat the Miami Heat 134-126.

He's now 1.9 points per game ahead of Oklahoma City's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the scoring race, is averaging 37.2 points per game in March, is averaging 35.1 points per game since the All-Star break. He's hitting his best stride and it's no coincidence that the Lakers — now winners of eight straight — are doing the same.

"It became just an incredible display of shotmaking, drawing fouls, etc.," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We just probably weren't active enough to get the ball out of his hands. ... We didn't get to enough stuff to keep him at least a little bit off-balance."

Doncic's final numbers from Thursday night, done on the same court where Miami's Bam Adebayo had his 83-point game against Washington earlier this month: 18 for 30 from the field, 9 for 17 from 3-point range, 15 for 19 from the line, with seven rebounds and five steals in there as well. Oh, and it should be noted that it was on the second night of a back-to-back, one where the Lakers played in Houston on Wednesday and didn't get to their hotel in Miami until 5:10 a.m. on Thursday.

"It was a superhero performance," Lakers coach JJ Redick said.

It tied the second-most points Doncic scored in a game, behind a 73-point night against Atlanta in 2024 and matching a 60-point night against New York in 2022 — both of those efforts coming when the Slovenian superstar played for Dallas.

Doncic also broke the scoring record for a Heat opponent, topping the 58-point effort from James Harden for Houston on Feb. 28, 2019.

Coaches always root for their own guys in award races, and rightly so. It shouldn't surprise anyone that Redick thinks Doncic should win MVP. But he's been openly wondering why Doncic — who has never finished higher than third in the MVP voting — isn't talked about more as a top contender this season, if not the very top contender.

And that was before Doncic had his 60-point outing Thursday.

"I think he's playing as well as anyone in basketball," Redick said. "He's really elevated his play at a really important time for our team. He's elevated the play of his teammates. ... He's one of the best and should be in the M-word conversation. Hopefully, people will start talking about that because he's having as good a season as anyone."

BetMGM Sportsbook lists Doncic as the second choice in the NBA race — but a distant second behind Gilgeous-Alexander, last year's winner.

Doncic's night in Miami was so stellar that it overshadowedanother record for LeBron James, who tied Robert Parish's all-time NBA mark for games played, and did so in a matchup where he had a 19-point, 15-rebound, 10-assist triple double.

James marveled at how easily Doncic made getting to 60 points look.

"It wasn't even like he was trying to force his way to get it," James said. "I mean, everything came in the flow. Once he got hot in that third (quarter), obviously he had a red hand and he just kept it going and then made some big time plays for us in the fourth. ... Big time, big time, big time."

High Point's upset starts run of 4 wins by double-digit seeds, busting March Madness brackets

NCAA High Point Wisconsin Basketball

The bid for a perfectNCAA Tournamentbracket disappeared for more than 25 million people by mid-afternoon on Thursday, fueled by 12th-seeded High Point'sfirst-round stunnerover fifth-seeded Wisconsin.

That was just the start. By the end of the first day of March Madness, fewer than 1% of entries in the ESPN bracket challenge were blemish-free.

High Point was one of four double-digit seeds to win. Following the Panthers were No. 11 seeds VCU and Texas and 10th-seeded Texas A&M.

Some of those upsets weren't that surprising.

North Carolina didn't have freshman sensation and leading scorer Caleb Williams (broken thumb) in its82-78 overtime loss to VCU.Of course, that was no excuse for the Tar Heels blowing a 19-point lead in the second half.

BYU never really recovered from losing star Richie Saunders (torn ACL) two months ago, having lost five of nine entering the tournament, and it couldn't make it all the way back from a 17-point deficit before losing79-71 to the Longhorns.

Saint Mary's leading scorer Paulius Murauskas didn't start because of an illness and was limited to four points in 23 minutes of a63-50 loss to Texas A&M.

ESPN reportedthat just over 24,000 of its 26.5 million brackets remained perfect through the first 12 games.

Just think how many more would have been busted if 16th-seeded Siena could have held on to its double-digit leadagainst top-seeded Duke.

The odds of going 67 for 67 (or 63 for 63 if you don't pick the First Four) in the bracket are longer than one of those 3-pointers hoisted up by High Point's Chase Johnston. Way longer.

TheNCAA estimatesthe chances of ending the tournament with a zero in the loss column range anywhere from one in 9.2 quintillion (if you flip a coin for every game). The odds drop a little if you make educated guesses — all the way to one in 120 billion.

The NCAA's own bracket challenge looked a lot like ESPN's, withonly 0.09% of entriesstill having a shot at perfection after a dozen games.

But hey, maybe things are going better for you in the office pool. The NCAA estimates there are anywhere between 60 and 100 million brackets filled out each year, only a portion of which are done in online challenges.

DoorDash is now letting its drivers train AI on the side

DoorDash delivery drivers can now add another side gig to their rotation: training AI-powered robots.

The food delivery giant launched a standalone app for couriers, called Tasks, that allows the company's 8 million U.S. gig workers to earn money by recording themselves doing various tasks. The data will then be used to help AI and robotics models better "understand the physical world," according to the company's announcement Thursday.

Tasks available on the new app include everyday chores like folding clothes, handwashing dishes and making a bed, with each gig offering a payment sum based on effort and complexity. Harder tasks, like pruning and repotting plants, offer more money.

Couriers can also get paid for recording speaking content in other languages. One listing on the app prompts Spanish speakers to have a "natural, unscripted conversation with your friends or family on everyday topics."

"We think this will be huge for building the frontier of physical intelligence," DoorDash cofounder and chief technology officer Andy Fang wrote in a social media post about the launch. "Look forward to seeing where this goes!"

A spokesperson for DoorDash told NBC News that the app will initially focus on activities that could help train AI or robotics, but the company plans to add other types of activities over time. The company added that the Tasks app is a small pilot compared to what's available in the general Dasher app, where a wider array of tasks are listed for couriers to complete in between deliveries.

It's part of a growing ecosystem of gigs that aim to farm AI training data from willing humans.

Last year, Uberpiloted a similar initiativeallowing its U.S. gig workers to perform additional digital tasks for money, including uploading photos and recordings used to train AI. And the data annotation industry hasboomed in recent years, with dozens of platforms hiring contractors to help train AI models online.

Now, companies are increasingly seeking to capture physical data about how people move in the world. Such content is then used to help a humanoid robot, for example, learn how to load a dishwasher.

The Los Angeles Times recently reportedthat Instawork, a staffing app that connects businesses with local hourly workers for same-day gigs, has been recruiting workers in Los Angeles to strap on headbands with a phone mount and record themselves cleaning their homes.

Other robotics developers have developed similar data collection strategies. California-based Sunday Robotics ships a "skill capture glove" to people across the country who collect motion data by doing household tasks wearing the robotic glove. The gloves, which remember their movements, are then used to train the AI-powered home robot that the company is building.

Aside from DoorDash's new AI training gig app, additional tasks will also roll out within the regular Dasher app for couriers. These could involve checking a restaurant's holiday hours, taking photos of a tricky drop-off location to help delivery drivers navigate, or "giving an autonomous vehicle a hand getting back on the road," the company's news release stated.

"These are the kinds of real-world problems we've been solving for over a decade, and we realized the same capabilities that helped us could help other businesses too," Ethan Beatty, general manager of DoorDash Tasks, said in a statement.
