Texas a Cinderella? No way, just a team hot at the right time

PORTLAND, OR — Do you know that feeling when trying on clothes and physically, it fits, but really it doesn't?

There's just something off. Maybe it doesn't look good. Maybe it's not the right style. Maybe there really isn't a reason, other than it just isn't right.

That's exactly what's going on in theNCAA Tournament.

A spectacle that is built on chaos hasn't had much of it, with the 2026 edition producing just four double-digit first round winners. Only one of them ismoving onto the Sweet 16, meaning we'll get a single Cinderella.

And who will be the lucky one riding the carriage?Texas?

Oh, that's no Cinderella.

In March Madness, one size does not in fact fit all.

"I don't think we ever really want to sign up to be the Cinderella story," said Texas coach Sean Miller. "Because we are the University of Texas."

Texas stuns Gonzaga to clinch Sweet 16 berth in NCAA Tournament

It's a puzzling juxtaposition: the tournament always calls for an underdog to root for, but you can't be much of one when you – checks notes –recorded $331.9 million in operating revenues and $325 millionin operating expenses in the 2024 fiscal year.

Even though this was its 11th NCAA Tournament win as a double-digit seed, Texas is so far from a Cinderella, one could argue it's the evil stepsister.

To their credit, theLonghornstried to not be one. They just weren't really successful at it. Sure it had some notable wins but it also: lost to Duke in the season opener, finished sixth in a not-so-loaded Maui Invitational, had a 8-9 Quad 1 record to go along with 1-4 Quad 2 mark and a Quad 3 loss.

"In some ways, the first couple of months of our season were very much a work in progress," Miller said.

Texas limped into the tournament with a three-game losing streak that pushed them into having to play in the First Four. Not ideal, but it did something that you never want to give teams with potential: an opportunity.

"We had a players-only meeting, and we just talked about that we just needed a chance," said Texas guard Dailyn Swain.

A chance Texas has taken full advantage of. The Longhorns edged NC State in the First Four, completely outperformed AJ Dybantsa and BYUin the first round and on Saturday night in Portland, were one step ahead of a veteran Gonzaga squad playing in its own backyard.

It's not so much a Cinderella, but a team playing up to the capabilities and expectations set on them. It just so happens there's a little No. 11 right next to their name.

"We're all adults here in this room," said Gonzaga coach Mark Few. "Some of these monikers we put on everybody from Cinderella to blue bloods and all that, I have a hell of a time understanding it. I mean, they make literally no sense.

"That is not a Cinderella team. That's a really talented basketball team with a really, really, really good coach, that has incredible resources and has a great history of doing great things in the tournament. That's just a 11-seed that had some tough losses during the year," he added.

The result might say something larger about the state of Cinderellas. This will now be back-to-back years without them.

Yes, Texas ensures that there will be a double-digit seed in the Sweet 16, which has happened in every tournament except 2007 since expanding in 1985. But last year's representative was Arkansas, aprogram that threw $7 million at John Caliparito get him to leave Kentucky. The one before that barely counts because at the end of the day, NC State is an ACC team with a rich history.

While we frantically wonder if the mid-majors are truly toast from making deep runs in the Big Dance, you do have to give Texas credit. The expectation isn't for Texas to lose 14 games in a season, but it is expected to do exactly what it's doing right now. This is not the same team that lost five of its last six games heading into Selection Sunday.

Jordan Pope is playing like the elite guard expected when he transferred from Oregon State in 2024. Matas Vokietaitis is completely commanding the interior, dominating any big man that dares get in his way. Sean Miller is showing why this will be ninth Sweet 16 trip, deciding to put in Camden Heide to hit the 3-point dagger against the Bulldogs. This looks like a real SEC contender.

The road to it wasn't pretty, and that's what makes Texas a great story. It figured it out at the right time when a lot of people counted them out. It makes them easy to root for. The Longhorns should celebrate this and have the mindset of a giant slayer when it arrives at the Sweet 16.

They have all the makings of it, but still, don't try to fit the glass slipper on Bevo.

"Sometimes the lessons you've learned along the way strengthen you. We're a much better team right now than we would have been a month ago. I think we're playing our best, everybody wants to play their best in March, and we just so happen to do it," Miller said. "Hopefully we can keep going."

Michigan State headed to Sweet 16 No. 17 after ousting Louisville

Coen Carr had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Jeremy Fears Jr. scored 12 points with 16 assists and No. 3 seed Michigan State locked down Louisville in a 77-69 win on Saturday to advance to the Sweet 16 for the 17th time under Tom Izzo.

Field Level Media

Fears set a Michigan State NCAA Tournament assists record and Carr helped carry the offense for the Spartans (27-7) and fell one point shy of his career high.

Two Fears' free throws with 2:10 remaining gave Michigan State a double-digit lead, 70-59, and the Spartans smothered Louisville into a contested shot airball that started the foul shot parade. Fears and Carr both missed free throws down the stretch and the Cardinals closed within six in the final 30 seconds but couldn't further close the gap.

Louisville leading scorer Ryan Conwell played through a left foot injury in the second half and did not appear to have his typical spring. Conwell had 21 points and made 5 of 11 attempts from 3-point range for the Cardinals (24-11).

He circled from the baseline around multiple screens to come free for a 25-foot 3 that made it 63-53 at the 5-minute mark only to see Carr square to the basket just in front in the Spartans' bench and drain a triple of his own. Carr was set up by Fears' 14th assist, setting the team NCAA Tournament record.

The Spartans head to the East Region semifinal in Washington, D.C., where their first game in the Sweet 16 will be the winner of seventh-seeded UCLA and No. 2 seed UConn. UCLA defeated Michigan State in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals, 88-84, March 13. The Spartans won the regular-season meeting, 82-59, in February.

Louisville's Adrian Wooley, who added 17 points, knocked down his fourth shot in a row, a corner 3, keeping the deficit at 10.

Carr caught a no-look pass from Fears on the right block with the shot clock near expiration and rattled in a reverse-pivot jumper plus a free throw for a 58-50 advantage with 7:30 left, then came up with a block of Conwell in the center of the lane and ripped away the loose ball in a game-shifting moment. At the other end, Louisville's Vangelis Zougris was whistled for a flagrant-1 foul on Jaxon Kohler with 7:12 remaining. Kohler made the pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 10.

Carr extended the possession with an offensive rebound and save that wound up in Kohler's hands for a 3 on a pick-and-pop with Fears to balloon Michigan State's lead to 13.

Michigan State found offense from Trey Fort, who connected on his third 3 of the game on Fears' 11th assist to keep the Spartans ahead 53-47 at the 10-minute mark. The Spartans got 21 points off the bench -- 12 from Fort -- and forced 15 turnovers.

Trump threatens attacks on Iranian power plants over opening Strait of Hormuz

CAIRO (AP) — President Donald Trump warned the U.S. will "obliterate" power plants in Iran if the Islamic Republic doesn't fully open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, while Iranian missiles struck two communities not far from Israel's main nuclear research center late Saturday, leaving buildings shattered and dozens injured in the attacks.

APTOPIX Israel Iran War

The developments signaledthe warwas moving in a dangerous new direction at the start of its fourth week.

Trump, who issued the ultimatum in a social media post while he spent the weekend at his Florida home, said he's giving Iran 48 hours to open the vital waterway or face a new round of attacks. He said the U.S. would destroy "various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!"

Iran warned early Sunday that any strike on its energy facilities would prompt attacks on U.S. and Israeli energy and infrastructure assets in the region, according to a statement citing an Iranian military spokesperson carried by state media and semiofficial outlets.

TheStrait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the rest of the globe's oceans, is a critical pathway for theworld's flow of oil. Attackson commercial shipsand threats of further strikes have stopped nearly all tankers from carrying oil, gasand other goodsthrough the passage, leading to cuts in output from some of the world's largest oil producers, because their crude has nowhere to go.

Iran strikes area near Israeli nuclear site

Israel's military said it was not able to intercept missiles that hit the southern cities of Dimona and Arad, the largest near the center in Israel's sparsely populated Negev desert. It was the first time Iranian missiles penetrated Israel's air defense systems in the area around the nuclear site.

"If the Israeli regime is unable to intercept missiles in the heavily protected Dimona area, it is, operationally, a sign of entering a new phase of the battle," Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on X before word of the Arad strike spread.

Rescue workers said the direct hit in Arad caused widespread damage across at least 10 apartment buildings, three of them badly damaged and in danger of collapsing. At least 64 people were taken to hospitals.

Dimona is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) west of the nuclear research center and Arad around 35 kilometers (22 miles) north.

Israel is believed to be theonly Middle East nation with nuclear weapons, though its leaders refuse to confirm or deny their existence. The U.N. nuclear watchdog said on X it had not received reports of damage to the Israeli center or abnormal radiation levels.

The Iranian strikes in Israel came after Tehran'smain nuclear enrichment site at Natanzwas hit earlier in the day.

Israel denies responsibility for attack on Natanz

Israel earlier Saturday denied responsibility for the strike on Natanz, nearly 220 kilometers (135 miles) southeast of Tehran. The Iranian judiciary's official news agency, Mizan, said there was no leakage.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has said the bulk of Iran's estimated 970 pounds (440 kilograms) of enriched uranium is elsewhere, beneath the rubble at its Isfahan facility. It said on X it was looking into the strike.

The Pentagon declined to comment on the strike on Natanz, which was also hit in the first week of the war and in the12-day warlast June. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said such strikes posed a "real risk of catastrophic disaster throughout the Middle East."

The U.S. and Israel haveoffered shifting rationalesfor the war, fromhoping to foment an uprisingthat topples Iran's leadership to eliminating itsnuclear and missile programsand its support for armed proxies. There have been no signs of an uprising, while internet restrictions limit information from Iran.

The war's effects are felt far beyond the Middle East, raising food and fuel prices.
