Hyo Joo Kim rides 63 to early lead at Fortinet Founders Cup

Hyo Joo Kim of South Korea finished her round birdie-eagle to post a 9-under-par 63 and take the first-round lead at the Fortinet Founders Cup on Thursday in Menlo Park, Calif.

Kim, a seven-time winner on the LPGA Tour and the 2015 Founders Cup champion, was bogey-free on her first trip around Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club, which is hosting for the first time.

"I am just so satisfied I had no bogeys. I had some mistakes in the beginning, but I was able to save them," Kim said. "I ended with an eagle, so I ended pretty happily."

Kim, 30, holed out for eagle at the par-5 18th hole.

"I couldn't see the hole from where I was," Kim said, "but people started cheering and then I heard a 'Yeah!' so I figured it went in."

Two strokes off the pace is fellow South Korea native Dongeun Lee, a 21-year-old making just her second LPGA start.

Lee's round of 65 also concluded with an eagle at No. 18, after five of her seven birdies came on the front nine.

"The line was quite long but I had the line in it so I just first wanted to approach it first, but it went in," Lee said. "So good."

Germany's Polly Mack and South Korea's Jin Hee Im are tied for third at 6-under 66.

Mack overcame a double-bogey 7 at No. 10 with eight total birdies.

"It's funny, I have my mental coach here this week and it's great to just really see that work coming in play right there," Mack said. "I think I did pretty good at just doing my post-shot routine and basically letting that bounce off right there and move on and just not let it affect me too much."

A knot at 4-under 68 included major winners Minjee Lee of Australia and Mao Saigo of Japan. Scotland's Gemma Dryburgh was still on the course as play wound down late Thursday afternoon, 4 under par through 15 holes.

World No. 2 Nelly Korda opened with a 2-under 70 and World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand settled for an even-par 72. Young star Rose Zhang, who won the 2024 Founders Cup, shot a 1-under 71 to begin just her second start of the season.

A California native, Zhang is preparing to graduate Stanford this spring and was glad for this week's tour stop in Northern California. She said she finished her final paper earlier this week.

"It is crazy. I honestly feel like it's a little bit anticlimactic because I'm playing golf," Zhang said. "I haven't been doing as much of celebrating, but internally I do feel really good about it."

No. 11 VCU storms back from 19 down to stun No. 6 North Carolina with largest 1st-round comeback in NCAA tournament history

No. 6 seed North Carolina led 70-56 and appeared to be cruising to victory against No. 11 VCU on Thursday.

Yahoo Sports

VCU had other ideas. The Rams, who trailed at one point by 19 points, reeled off 12 straight and stormed back in the final 7:11 of regulation to force overtime andstun the Tar Heels, 82-78, in the first round ofthe NCAA tournament.

With the win, VCU completedthe sixth-largest comeback in NCAA tournament history and the largest comebackin the first round.

Terrence Hill Jr. led the rally with a game-high 34 points while shooting 7 of 10 from 3-point distance. He scored 23 of his 34 points after halftime, including the go-ahead bucket with 15.1 seconds remaining in overtime.

UNC collapse opens door for VCU

UNC was in control for much of Thursday's game and led 56-37 early in the second half. But VCU rode aggressive defense, a deep bench and improved second-half shooting to take control down the stretch. Poor execution from the Tar Heels helped the VCU cause.

UNC scored just 5 points in the final 7:11 of regulation and didn't score in overtime until a Seth Trimble free throw with 2:02 remaining. It didn't hit a field goal in the extra session. It added up to a dramatic collapse that will leave a bitter taste for North Carolina.

After allowing VCU to tie the game at 75 late in regulation, North Carolina had a chance to set up a game-winning shot attempt with 11 seconds remaining. But junior center Henri Veesaar lost the ball out of bounds before UNC could get up a shot.

Trimble stole the ensuing inbounds pass for a last-second shot at a game-winner. But it missed the mark, and the game went to overtime, where VCU won a battle of attrition as neither team scored in the first 2:13 of the extra session.

Terrence Hill Jr. caps clutch effort with game-winner

VCU struck first in overtime to take a 77-75 lead. Then a step-back 3 from the top of the key by Hill put the Rams up for good, 80-78 with 15.1 seconds remaining.

Veesaar had a chance to tie the game with two free throws on the other end. But he missed the first, ending UNC's best hope of forcing a second overtime.

The win is the first in the NCAA tournament for VCU since 2016. The Rams advance to face the winner between No. 3 seed Illinois and No. 14 seed Penn on Saturday.

Another disappointing end for UNC

For North Carolina, its once-promising season ends in disappointment. UNC had high hopes for the season around All-America freshman Caleb Williams. But Williams broke his right thumb in practice late in the season and was not available for the end of the regular season or the ACC and NCAA tournaments.

UNC played well at times without Wilson in the lineup and appeared on track for victory on Thursday. But after shooting 16 of 35 (45.7%) from the field in the first half, North Carolina's offense broke down late. The Tar Heels shot a combined 13 of 35 (37.1%) in the second half and overtime. Poor free-throw shooting that's plagued the Tar Heels all season struck again as UNC shot 12 of 20 (60%) from the stripe.

And UNC's season ends in the first round of the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season.

The loss also marks another disappointing end under fifth-year head coach and former UNC guard Hubert Davis. Davis guided North Carolina to the national championship game in his first season with a run that featured a Final Four win over rival Duke.

The Tar Heels missed the NCAA tournament altogether the following season. They advanced to the Sweet 16 a year later, but have now suffered first-round exits in the two tournaments since.

Luka Dončić posts Lakers' first 60-point game since Kobe Bryant's farewell performance

The Slovenian star posted 60 points ina 134-126 win over the Miami Heat, the highest scoring total of his Lakers career and tied for the second-highest mark of his career. It's also the Lakers' first 60-pointer since Kobe Bryant's legendary "Mamba Out" farewell game in 2016.

Draft your Yahoo Fantasy Baseball team for the 2026 MLB Season

The last Laker to score more than 60 points was Bryant with 61 on Feb. 2, 2009.

Between Thursday and Dončić's 40 points in the first night of the back-to-back, he posted 100 points in the span of 25 hours. He has averaged 40.9 points in his past eight games.

His full line: 60 points on 18-of-30 shooting from the field (9-of-17 on 3-pointers and 15-of-19 on free throws), 7 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists and 2 turnovers.

Dončić had only 21 points at halftime, at which point the Lakers were down 65-59 and seemingly feeling the effects of the back-to-back. They came alive with a 15-1 run midway through the third quarter, and then Dončić scored 20 points to put the game away in the fourth.

And because some people might care about this now, Bam Adebayo had 28 points and 10 rebounds while making 7-of-10 free throws.

"I know what it's like to be in that mode,Adebayo said after the game, referring tohis recent 83-point gamethatbothered more than a few Lakers fans. "As people can see it's not easy to hit 80. He made some tough shots and you tip your hat off."

This win is the Lakers' eighth straight and 11th in their past 12 games. That has improved their record to 45-25, still good for third in the Western Conference.

That run of success has seen Dončić enter the conversation for his first career NBA MVP award. He now has the second-best odds of any player on BetMGM at +1500, though that's a distant second behind the favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is -1000 to win the award for the second straight year.

Regardless of what hardware Dončić receives, this is good as he's looked since the inexplicable trade that sent him to Los Angeles. And it remains to be seen what else the Lakers accomplish this season.

Why was Aden Holloway arrested?

Holloway was arrested on Monday, March 16 and charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp after the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force found 2.1 pounds of marijuana in his residence.

He was transported to the Tuscaloosa County Jail and was set with a $5,000 bond, according toThe Tuscaloosa News, part of the USA TODAY Network. The University of Alabama later released a statement and said he was removed from campus and won't return to the team until the university's office of student conduct finishes its investigation.

What Nate Oats said of Aden Holloway's absence

Alabama coach Nate Oats said he has talked to Holloway since his arrest, and said he'll continue supporting the junior guard. He also declined to speculate whether Holloway has any chance of returning to the Crimson Tide should they advance to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament.

"I've met with him in person, talked to him on the phone multiple times,"Oats said March 19."Look, I'm an adult. I've made mistakes. We all have things we'd like to do differently. Now is not the time to ignore a kid that you've built a real relationship with. Now is the time he needs more love from the adults in his life than at any point. ... you get into it to help impact young men's lives. Well, if you disappear when they make a mistake, I'm not so sure that's a genuine relationship you've built.

"I've got three daughters. They've made mistakes. You don't disappear on them when they need your help. I won't be disappearing on him. I talked to him yesterday morning on the phone. I talked to him the night before that. I've talked to him every day so far."

Alabama center Aiden Sherrell also saidthe team still supports Holloway, but is focused on its first-round game.

"We're just focusing on the task at hand. Biz (Holloway) is our brother," Sherrell said. "We're here for him, but we're focused on the game and focused on making a long run in March."

Aden Holloway stats

Here are Holloway's per game averages during his three-year college career:

  • 2023-24 (Auburn): 7.3 points with 1.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game on 31.8% shooting

Anti-apartheid activist, human rights campaigner and UN diplomat Nicholas Haysom dies at age 73

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Nicholas Haysom, a white South African anti-apartheid activist who was tapped by prisoner-turned-presidentNelson Mandelato help draft the country's new constitution that enshrined equal rights for Black people, minorities and white people, has died at 73.

Associated Press

Haysom went on from high-level positions promoting human rights in his home country to a distinguished career as a U.N. diplomat, serving in hot spots from Afghanistan and Iraq to Somalia and South Sudan.

His daughter, Rebecca Haysom, told The Associated Press that he died Tuesday in New York "after a long, valiant battle with heart and lung complications."

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Haysom "devoted his life to justice, dialogue, and reconciliation -- from his central role in South Africa's democratic transition serving as chief legal and constitutional adviser to president Nelson Mandela to years of leadership in U.N. posts in some of the world's most complex and fragile settings."

His legacy "will endure in the peace processes he advanced, the institutions he strengthened, and the principles he helped bring to life around the world," the U.N. chief said in a statement.

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa,a former anti-apartheid activist, said the country mourns "a distinguished diplomat and a pioneer of our democratic administration whose commitment to justice and peace made our country, our continent and the world a better place."

"I remember him for applying his legal acumen, mentorship, wisdom and integrity to the development of our constitution," Ramaphosa said in a statement urging South Africans "to honor his contribution to our nation and the international community by upholding the fundamental rights and maintaining the peace he advocated so passionately and eloquently."

He came from a family that believed in equality

Nicholas Roland Leybourne "Fink" Haysom grew up in Durban in a liberal family that believed in racial equality, especially his mother who was an activist against apartheid. At university, he said he became a critic of apartheid as well and decided to go to law school at the Universities of Natal and Cape Town to tackle the conditions of how people lived.

He went on to become president of the anti-apartheid National Union of South African Students and he said in a U.N. interview last year that he was arrested or detained about half a dozen times, once serving six months in solitary confinement in about 1980. Ramaphosa said he also had a creative side: He was South African Playwright of the Year in 1987.

Nobody at that time thought apartheid would end, Haysom said, and it was a "tremendous moment" when Mandela was released in 1990. At the time, Haysom was a member of a very activist human rights law firm.

The African National Congress, which Mandela led, asked Haysom to join its Constitutional Commission, and he said he spent several years with "a very exciting group of intellectuals" conceptualizing the new South Africa, and negotiating with the National Party, which instituted and enforced the apartheid system of racial segregation, on how to get there.

Having been a pariah in much of the world, Haysom said the group wanted to find the perfect formula for a constitutional state that appreciated the need for equality among all its citizens and recreated a social contract "which we wanted to be a lesson for the world." It wasn't easy, he said, but "the South African constitution is still regarded as perhaps one of the most progressive constitutions in the world."

"And I think that's what led to me being asked to be Mandela's legal adviser ... while he was president," Haysom said, a position he held from 1994 to 1999.

Mandela wanted to set an example for the first post-apartheid government to respect the law, Haysom said, "and he was really at the forefront of creating a society built on respect for legal equality and human rights."

He saw Mandela every morning and said he was "tremendously gracious."

"But he was steely, strong in the conviction he had that he was embarking on the right path, and he persevered," Haysom said. "As I say to my children, the lesson of Mandela is not just being a nice person, it's perseverance in your ideals that'll change the world."

He worked across the decades to end ethnic discord

Under Mandela, Haysom joined a team that helped end ethnic violence in Burundi between Hutus and Tutsis in the 1990s. He then was asked to try to find a formula to restore peace in Sudan between the north and south, which eventually led to South Sudan seceding and becoming an independent country in 2011.

Haysom then spent from 2005 to 2007 in Iraq trying to find a formula for its communities — Shia, Sunni and Kurd — to live together, an issue he saw in all conflicts. From 2007 to 2012, he served in then-U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's office as director for political, peacekeeping and humanitarian affairs. He then spent four years in Afghanistan from 2012 to 2016 in two U.N. roles.

Most of the rest of his U.N. career was focused on Sudan and South Sudan, where he had been head of the peacekeeping mission since 2021 except for a brief stint in Somalia. He was ordered to leave by the Somali government in 2019 after questioning the arrest of a former leader of the al-Shabab extremist group.

Haysom is survived by his wife Delphine and their two sons Charles and Hector, as well as his three older children, Rebecca, Simone, and Julian, from his previous marriage to Mary Ann Cullinan.

Haysom said there was a time when he was "quite probably inappropriately proud" of his efforts particularly in Burundi, Sudan and South Africa, but after a few years all those peace agreements were in trouble.

It's a recognition, he said, that peace doesn't last forever and democracy requires "constant engagement by people of good intention."

Tens of millions under heat alerts as record temperatures hit the West

The summerlike conditions are expected to persist and expand east in the coming days.

Across Southern California and the Desert Southwest, around 38 million people are under heat alerts. High temperatures in the upper 90s and triple digits have been common throughout the region, thanks to a sprawling heat dome that remains parked over the West.
