Three men have been brutally caned 42 times today for consuming alcohol and breaking Sharia law on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Pictures showed an intimidating executor, or 'algojo', gripping a rattan before carrying out the public caning against four men in front of Islamic court officials. Dressed in brown robes, the algojo struck the backs of the convicts with the wooden cane in the centre of a white, tiled room.

Girls who are overweight in childhood may be at greater risk of early puberty, genetic research has revealed. In the largest study of its kind to date, a team from the University of Cambridge studied the DNA of around 800,000 women from around the world. They discovered more than 1,000 variants – small changes in DNA – that influence the age of when girls started their first period. Just under half of these variants affected puberty by increasing weight gain in early childhood.
